i know it's so corny and blatant to say 'queen jane' is a weed metaphor but i read this as dylan being tempted to smoke; when fame causes his connection with his family to fall apart, when the world and nature no longer seem beautiful, when the folk crowd (the bandits) start to complain, why shouldn't he just smoke?

has cemented its place as a love song of all time for me. when your life is crashing down around you, when your own family and even your enemies have to look at you with pity- won't you come see me?

the juxtaposition of Dylan's sincere tone and his condescending lyrics makes this song irresistible [2]
