Wow. This is the only Springsteen album I actually like. Pretty decent for a 60-something.

He's got a lot of albums that are a lot better than this. I mean, I'm biased, I like all of them, but it seems weird that this is THE album of his you like, when he's got so many classics to pull from in so many different styles. It'd be like liking only one Dylan album or only one Alice Cooper album. Maybe give him another try with some fresh ears? I always fall back on "The Wild, The Innocent", "Born to Run", "Darkness on the Edge of Town", and "Tunnel of Love" as my favorites. Sorry if it sounds like I'm telling you what to do, I just find your comment a little odd to me. It's all about the music man, just recommending some favorites. :)

Ha! Completely agree with you, what was I thinking?! I still had a lot of evolving to do at that point, I guess. Thanks for calling out my younger self ;-)

To explain why I felt that way, I think I had an aversion to music that was overplayed on the radio when I was younger. I sort of equated Springsteen's (and other popular artists, like Fleetwood Mac) music with over-commercialism and it took me a long time to get past that and see his merit as a musician. But I'm glad that this album got the ball rolling for me. 'Land of Hope and Dreams' really opened my eyes, still one of my favourite songs of his.

it's such a shame it's overproduced/loud, it could really have pushed Darkness at the Edge of Town. What they did here was make everything sound linear and lack any dynamic quality that good albums of his have.. in Born in the USA, his voice really blasts through the speakers. In this though... it's like the vocal is on the exact same level as the instruments.

Think I've come around to liking "Wrecking Ball" more than "Magic" (just in time for Monday's show). Works in the balance of angry and joyous folk he struck on "Seeger Sessions" so well.

This was a really good surprise. I feared he might have lost his touch after the dire "Working On A Dream". That album now becomes a bit of a mystery sandwiched as it is between two fantastic Boss records. This LP is growing on me all the time. Some great songs that can sit alongside his very best.
