Biography
This unsigned, self-produced band is called Brumby, and except for friends, family, and a handful of fans, virtually no one knows who they are.
Cousins Oliver (vocals), Tyler (guitar), and Spencer Tingey (bass, keys) have been together since birth. Their best friend, Dylan Self (drums), has been around since kindergarten.
After years as friends and “musicians with benefits”, they finally decided to formally start a band.
With a blend of musical imagery and a classy vibe, Brumby stand apart from others their age in the local music scene.
“We try to have various sounds and emotions. With each individual song we’ll always discuss what emotions we’re going for, what kind of imagery we want to promote,” says 18 year old Tyler Tingey.
People often ask what Brumby sound like. A crude recreation might include a slice of Muse, a handful of Radiohead, a dash of Coldplay, a pinch of U2, and a drop of The Arcade Fire. Throw it in the oven that is the heat of Las Vegas and you might have a Polaroid of a Picasso painting of Brumby. Because honestly, they just sounds like, well, Brumby.
The sound is versatile, but not fickle; intelligent, but down to earth; big, but personal. Sometimes it sounds like a walk in the park on a cool autumn evening. Sometimes it sounds like you’re riding off into the purple mountains of a desert sunset. Other times it feels like your car has dropped 100 feet and smashed into a frigid lake.
Dylan Self’s percussion is expressive, innovative, and uniquely significant in its role, stretching beyond the bounds of tempo and dynamic and seeping into more subtle realms of atmosphere and imagery.
Tyler Tingey’s guitar is the heart of the Brumby sound, often dreamily swelling, dissipating, and breathing. The chords are colorful and flavorful. So unique is the sound that oftentimes you cannot tell it is a guitar at all.
Oliver Tingey’s vocals possess the gentility of an all-boys choir. Other times they are harsh, urgent, and desperate. Whatever the occasion, they are always melodious.
Spencer’s bass lines dance and cruise. They make your legs wobble like Forest Gump and create context for Tyler’s guitar.
