It is very hard to explain how or why this is. There is meaning in each of the elements, the handling noise, the pitch-shifted vocal samples, the vinyl noise, the subtle reference to the all of the breaks-based sub-genres though a sort of haze, and the varying tempos, the songs within songs. It is the present haunting the past. To those that argue that it’s just a bunch of samples thrown together I argue the opposite. I very much commend Burial on his ability to convey this vibe through music and sound alone. And if you don’t get it you are not the target audience, so just move along to something more basic.

I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

If you don’t like this song or think it is boring you don’t really get it, and that’s ok. It is not for everyone. My opinion is that this track is magical. It is very soothing. Where vaporwave is a recontextualizing of 90’s corporate background music and slow jams Truant/Rough Sleeper does the same for 90’s underground dance music but on a much more sophisticated level. In order to fully appreciate Truant/Rough Sleeper you had to have traveled. I would argue that you have had to love, and appreciate all the various genres of electronic dance music from the 20 years prior and just lived your life through it while the track itself is not dance music. Truant is like a flashback of a drunken memory of going out on a Saturday night to clubs or raves in the 90’s or 00’s and while Rough Sleepers like waking up at 2pm on Sunday the next day. It lived very much in the contexts of a past.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons.

my use of word "pitchfork" doesn't change a thing about this track being overhyped rubbish

oh my god pitchfork likes him - must be terrible and overrated! can't comprehend how some people genuinely enjoy his music and/or truly feel he's fucking fantastic! The second someone mentions pitchfork when complaining about an artist, all credibility goes out the window. You're complaining about a culture, not a song.

ok, I see now how my post might have been confusing - I wasn't referring to minecraft sample, just shouting about the track

I don't give a shit what he samples, this track is excellent example of overrated and overhyped "pitchfork star" Burial always was - just throw 1000's of samples and boring beat and you'll get another "masterpiece", right.

The final couple minutes of this song: it's like a disintegrating mix of all the early '00s dark garage and proto-dubstep firing off deep in Burial's subconscious. Brilliant.

@ malonemuert - In what way is Burial overrated? He produces excellent atmospheric tracks and can mix really well. Whether or not he sampled games like Minecraft is irrelevant to his skill. So fucking what! He's not DJ Shadow and doesn't find the most obscure content. Get over yourself.

Wow if this is a weaker Burial track-how good are the rest? Sadly it's one of their best-unbelieveably good....

Burial has proved he can sustain a mood for 10 minutes but , personally, I think his sound works far better when condensed an' is focused, but this is still a good track.
