"Welcome to My Island" is about taking ownership of one's life and creating a space free from judgement, expectations and the opinions of others. The lyrics depict Polachek's own journey in learning to embrace her true self and live with passion and confidence. The chorus expresses her desire to truly inhabit her life and "float on", while the bridge reflects the difficult but ultimately freeing lessons life can teach, such as not running away from her own faults and not getting caught up in attachment, power dynamics or peer pressure. Ultimately, the song is a celebration of the beauty and strength that comes with independence, understanding and self-acceptance.
It is the fourth single of Caroline Polachek's second studio album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You.
