Biography

Catherine Elms is a purple-haired singer/songwriter/pianist, combining heavy rock, dark cabaret, emotionally-charged melodies and idiosyncratic lyrics.

“I try to push boundaries and create unique, honest music that resonates with people.”
But Catherine insists that she is not just another “piano chick”.
“When people see a girl behind a piano, there’s this false notion that she must be a classically trained pianist who ‘broke free’ from her classical restraints… but that’s not me at all. I identify more with the DIY punk ethos popularised by artists such as The Dresden Dolls and Emilie Autumn. I try to use the piano as a punk-rock instrument rather than a classical instrument.
That’s why I admire Amanda Palmer (from the Dresden Dolls) so much. She uses the piano as a rock instrument in a way I’ve never heard before, and creates dark, beautiful music despite her limited playing abilities. She really inspires me to create music, and to be unafraid to reveal it to the world.”

Catherine’s music has been described as dark, moving, and honest, dealing with universal themes such as unrequited love, anger, betrayal and female empowerment.
“I’ve had a lot of support from people on the internet, and have been featured on a number of female-based internet blogs and radio stations. I hope that the release this EP will bring about more opportunities for airplay and online interest.”

Catherine released her debut demo in August 2009, and plans to release a full-length album in October 2010.
