They're all style over substance, but when you want life to function as a purely aesthetic phenomenon, they'll really add to your nighttime drive-arounds.

Absolutely, but in those instances, there's an intuitive sense the style is pointing at a depth absent from superficial stylism. Style can be assessed formally, whereas substance is an abstraction not necessarily about intellectual stimulation or thematic content, and thus is harder to define. "Substance" in the manner I use it is more about conveying the truth in some sense. When I listen to Chromatics, I only hear the creation of a mood or atmosphere or vibe or what have you, and nothing more.

Ditto. What details I could glean are puzzling. It seems like it was actually finished and ready to be released in the mid-10s, but for some reason, they opted to not move forward at the proverbial 11th hour. They kept recording and releasing new work though, culminating in 2019's Fade to Grey. So... what happened? I mean, did they just lose confidence in that album's quality? It seems like if the band is finished anyway, there shouldn't be any harm in releasing it now. It's not like they have to worry about their fans not showing up at their concerts, since there won't be any, and certainly it getting so wrapped up in mystery will only drive up sales, even if it's not as good as their other work.

I've grown to think Closer to Grey is actually their best work. Really hate that they're gone.

i'm confused on how i'm supposed to listen to the newish album(s) + the order in which they were released because spotify only shows year. it looks like faded now, closer to grey, and closer to grey (deluxe) have mostly repeating tracks but some additional ones, remixes, instrumentals etc. what is the recommended way to get the full/intended experience? i guess just make a playlist with the songs appearing once only? idek. i kind of feel like what i'm scrobbling at this point for that album would possibly be which cover art i like better lmao

I've always thought I wasn't paying attention to Chromatis activities and that's why I was always confused with their releases. But after carefully following them since around the 'Closer to Grey' release, I can still say: I understand zero shit what they're doing, releasing, planning, scrapping, re-releasing, releasing after years of not releasing and similar.

Especially the 'Faded Now' album was a weird move. Very little time since the release of 'Closer to Grey' and a whole other album, half of whose songs are unreleased and half just alternative ('on film', they say) versions of the previous album's songs. Or is it a deluxe version of the previous album? Hard to say because Spotify has them both.

new direction sounds unpolished, as if they tapped on the very surface of it and called it a day. i didn't expect kfl or nd part 2, and closer to grey is a good album but not for chromatics, for some novices maybe. dear tommy singles feel a whole deal more labored over. touch red is a winner, though.

Lights As a Feather is a re-invention of his style, just like synth pop + trip hop.
