Cameron Emerson-Elliott has been writing songs, recording them and playing live as Community Radio since 2008, when he first debuted his indie-pop-folk act supporting Luke Steele at the Brass Monkey in Cronulla. He has since played a stack of gigs across Sydney - supporting the likes of Robert Schneider (Apples in Stereo) and Danny George Wilson (Grand Drive). Cameron also plays guitar with indie rockers Youth Group, and was a founding member of late nineties punchy mod troupe The John Reed Club.
Cam’s new outfit - Community Radio - are reminiscent of the ecstatic shifting lofi guitar play of “chimp rock” era Tang! Records releases, and the breezy zip and awkward space of early Go-Between’s. On a more contemporary tip - their also inspired by artists such as sonic bohemian Ariel Pink, and the beauty, wit and songwriting smarts of crooner Cass McCombs.
In the last 6 months, Community Radio has grown into a full band (with the addition of drums, bass and farfisa), and they’ve been described live as “living up to their name perfectly: charming, ramshackle and enjoyable, but there was no way you'd confuse them with a professional outfit … their effect-heavy guitar, languid vocals and minimalist drums (floor tom and snare) was something more akin to 80s dream pop, especially that of New Zealand during Flying Nun's heyday”. - Andrew P Street, Time Out Sydney Magazine, Sept 2009.
The band are currently working on an EP, which they plan to release mid 2010.
Whilst in High School, and during his first year at Art School, Cameron worked at local community radio station 2XX in Canberra. Back then (the mid nineties), he was working the night shift on his show “Velvet Nights”, playing music from bands inspired by the Velvet Underground, and having more fun then anything.
