Biography

“The original video game Marathon (released 1994), is a science-fiction classic similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey. These two creations were visionary, however, when we see them today they seem dated by the tools available when they were created. Regardless, Marathon was an incredibly awe-inspiring game!

I feel that these remakes are a good way for me to express my own vision of one of the best aspects of the game, the music. When I was young and impressionable, Marathon provided me with a detailed story and universe that I absolutely loved. To this day, I feel that some of the intricacies of Marathon's story are unresolved (see the Marathon story page for more about that) and I think that is what made Marathon a timeless classic. Bungie created a rather non-straightforward piece of art that you can look at over and over again and see something different every time. The Marathon songs had a lot more to say than they originally were able to. My goal with the remakes was to attempt to bring them to life, as I hear them.

For me, the game of Marathon is an experience and a piece of art that shaped me into the person that I am today. These remakes are my acknowledgement of that influence, and my sincere thank you to the creators.”

A remastered FLAC version is also available here, and eighteen of the songs can also be streamed on YouTube. Hardgrove’s work makes up the backbone of the soundtrack of the video game Marathon Eternal; eighteen of the twenty-six tracks in version 1.2, the latest release as of this writing, are Hardgrove’s work.
