Biography

Cube Juice, born Nagao Shinichi in 1975, is a diverse producer, musician, and visual artist. Nagao began recording in his home studio in 1999. He was featured on an omnibus, rabid chords co. vol 1, that year. Shortly afterward he released two mini-albums, Demo Tracks 1 and Demo Tracks 2, and a single, Sun Sunshine. These releases showed his talent as a songwriter and musician (he plays all his own instruments). While these were more pop-rock oriented, his later release would continue to venture into more electronic realms.

In April of 2002, Nagao made his major label debut with the single Head Long, released on Victor. In July of the same year he released the single Explosion. As he ventured more into electronica, his visual presentation became a stronger emphasis as well. His music videos all feature the same three characters, three white little bears. The videos are made by Mr. Ishiura (TGB). The videos for Head Long and Explosion were shown at Resfest that year, and won five image awards in various countries. The bears are also featured in the artwork on his releases, and are infamous for dying at he end of all his videos (drowning, heads exploding, getting hit by a truck).

In 2003, there were two full albums released under the Cube Juice name, In the Eye of a Wili-Wili in early 2003 and III in late 2003. The first album featured numb (Rebirth/Hoon) as a remixer. His second album, III, featured artists such as Kenji Furuya (Dragon Ash), Stereolab, and Plaid as guest remixers.

Since the release of III, Nagao has been busy working on his own music (there has yet to be any released) and working on writing and producing for other artists (Such as BUCK-TICK’s Atsushi Sakurai).

Nagao’s Cube Juice music is something to be closely listened to. His knowledge of music production is fascinating; there really isn’t one category you can put his music into. He’s worked with synthpop, IDM, shoegazer, ambient, house, and so much more. There is going to be something you will like in the Cube Juice catalogue, no matter what your tastes may be.
