Biography
Cult Figures were a U.K. punk/post-punk band formed at the Solihull College Of Technology in the West Midlands in 1977 by school friends Jon Hodgson, Gary Jones and Tim Wilday. Jones paid £20 for a Kay electric guitar and a practice amp and Wilday borrowed a pair of drumsticks from Rick Buckler of The Jam. After playing several gigs, Wilday left the group and two new members, Martin (bass) and Jock (drums) joined. The group were given a chance to record by Birmingham's Swell Maps (Hodgson, Wilday and Jones had gone to school with Epic Soundtracks and Richard of Swell Maps, as well Spizz of Spizzenergi) after the Maps started their own label Rather Records, Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks of the Swell Maps helped the quartet record the single "Zip Nolan" (providing backing vocals) in 1978. Cult Figures went on to record several EP's before disbanding in 1980. Hodgson and Jones briefly reemerged in 1988 in a post-Cult Figures band called Iron Fish.
