I don't get the significance of this band because I never heard their earlier work/not hugely familar with Jaar (AAL is tight) - so I will say I wasn't impressed with this album, it's a bit too meandering for my taste and it was hard for me to stay focused, and doesn't deliver on the strength of its singles. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

i respect your take, but i don't really buy into the 'vibes/songwriting' dichotomy you're sketching -- as a 'vibe music enjoyer' i very much consider creating compelling vibes as part of great songwriting. i surely do see that there are bands out there creating vibe music that's a bit on the shallow and boring side, but to me, Darkside do not belong to that camp -- i love their latest record to bits and it's an intriguing piece of music to me from start to finish. different strokes for different folks, i suppose!

I feel you on that too, respect that as well. Again, I just want to point out EYE did not say Darkside was vibes music. I was just responding to the user that said "the vibes were Immaculate." lol. What we briefly saw with "vibes artists" like Men I Trust, Gus Dapperton, Still Woozy, and others, WAS the sort of concerning "well the vibes are cool, but where are the songs?" panic that I was talking about. I don't think Darkside falls into that category at ALL, but I just wanted to also state that "vibes" are not the only thing a song needs. Now you could be arguing "in some cases that's fine!" and I'd agree with u there - in SOME cases that's fine. But to *prioritize* vibes over songwriting is where I draw the line. We still need good thought-out songs as well! That's all I really wanted to say lol

On first listen I wasn't sure if Spiral was quite as consistent as Psychic... but after a few more spins, it's become apparent that it really is its own animal. Parts of the record lean a little into the realm of Jaar's solo work, but the grooves are still plentiful and I think the whole record is – once again – drenched in a vibe that's perfect for night drives. I'm really pleased with it and would even go as far as to say it was worth the wait.

Coming full circle to the first anniversary of Psychic, and here we are left without Darkside. Shame, I was really hoping for a new EP or album to accompany the fall. If there was ever an atmospheric album that suited the cold dark winter nights it was Psychic. One of those rare albums that has flawless progression, every song is a joyous journey.
