Of course it's not a completely amazing album start to finish, but where it shines it really shines. I love 4 tracks on this very much.

Check out new Tony Visconti mix from box "A New Career In A New Town (1977-1982). It's brilliant!

[2] I've always considered this album to be among Bowie's best. The major accomplishment here, IMO, is that the Ambient/Krautrock/Electronic/Enoisms don't seem so distinct from the Art Pop/Rock tunes as they did on "Heroes" and, in particular, Low. Those are both great records and I don't want to get into a "this one's better than that one" pissing contest, but the seamless incorporation of the elements that made up the instrumental side of Low and the darker experimental tracks of "Heroes" into the actual songs on Lodger give it a greater coherence than either of the first two Berlin Trilogy albums, I think.

I was reading this comment and nodding along and thinking, "Man, that guy totally nailed my thoughts on this album!" Then I realized the significance of the "[2]" and looked back through the older comments on this shoutbox. I hope I'm not losing my memory.

Great album, excellent conclusion to the Berlin Trilogy. Also, Adrian Belew is a monster.

Definitely an underrated album. I think it got overlooked on its release because it's not as radical a statement as any of the three albums that preceded it, but it's still full of excellent tunes.

This album is just great. It has some really great songs. I can't understand why people say this album is bad... Anyway... Everybody has its own opinion.

By far his best....and my album of the year....certainly the best of Berlin trilogy. [3]

That's true, but the fact that the tracks were more akin to the verse-chorus-verse typical song than those from Low and "Heroes" is the reason it wasn't seen as groundbreaking as the other two. But Eno and his "Oblique Strategies" cards did some incredible work in the techniques used for recording them. African Night Flight is much more astonishing in that way than many other Berlin Era songs.

This one wasn't as experimental as the other two of the "Berlin Trilogy", but it had pretty strange compositions to be a pop record. Maybe that's why it's not as revered as the other two. Not many people got it. In my opinion, the only bad track is Red Money, but that's because I just love Sister Midnight by Iggy Pop. One of the best, for sure.

Lodger does make me wonder if Bowie had just been listening to lots of Talking Heads when he made it.
