I wouldn't say it's their best, "Cantara" and "Anywhere Out of the World" are a bit overrated IMHO. "Xavier" is stellar though. Very good album, either way.

This one is a real masterpiece (as are several of their other albums) and you can hear its influence on a number of Black Metal/Folk Metal/Pagan Metal artists and records, in addition to the various Gothic and Neoclassical Darkwave artists who it influenced. But putting aside the large influence it had, it's just a masterful collection of songs that, as I said in an earlier comment, transports you to another time and place when you listen to it. It's a perfect album to listen to without distraction on headphones in a darkened room.

I'll have to play that one some more and report back. I've actually only heard it a couple of times. Would you say that's a band/album that took some influence from this album/Dead Can Dance in general?

A masterful album that forms a terrific 1-2 punch with Spleen and Ideal. Putting the two of them on back to back really takes you to a different time and place.

@Nekrovoor: what makes you so sure that they are human? I mean, at least in Lisa's case it's unlikely. There are no female humans. But however. Great album, great atmosphere. It's impossible for this album to get boring at some point.

"This sounds like what would happen if a bunch of Dungeons & Dragons nerds got together and tried to create music designed for the specific purpose of being looped on the homepage of a site dedicated to Castlevania fan fiction."

Favorite Varg's album by DCD :) Every time Varg talks 'bout the dawn of black metal in Norway he mentions that he listened not only to metal music, but "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun" as well :)
