Hasjarl is somethin else eh? Fascinating that he breathes total chaotic dissonance and yet writes beautiful riffs and melodies like this

"With a candle in reverential contemplation and give voluptuous harbour to vile insects. He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption. The scorpion shall open the book of Salomon for you to see and the snake slither out of the lips that delivered once. The redeemer of man, born out of shameful maternity... He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption. The lactiferous Beast subjugated reason to appetite. Praised be human nature, ciborium of shame and waste, for bathing in decline a redeemer moisty of semen so contemptible!"

Further notes on the chant section: The melody for the chant is actually from a Meiji-era Japanese song entitled "荒城の月" ("Kōjō no Tsuki", literally "The Moon over the Ruined Castle"), written by Rentarō Taki (滝 廉太郎, 1879-1903), who unfortunately died at age 23 of tuberculosis; the original lyrics, not used in the monks' performance, are by Bansui Doi (土井 晩翠). The most common arrangement is Kōsaku Yamada's (山田 耕筰), and it seems to be this version that the Monks of Chevetogne used as the basis for theirs. Père Maxime Gimenez made the decision to pair the melody from "Kōjō no Tsuki" with the lyrics of the Cherubikon; Gimenez first heard the song in 1986. https://www.culturebeanz.com/entry/2019/10/13/144909/ (Japanese source)

Gimenez wrote (machine translated from Japanese): “The choice of Japanese tunes in the context of the Byzantine-Slavic liturgy may seem somewhat arbitrary and bold. But no external or formal standard can determine whether such music is sacred or not. In order to distinguish the aesthetic ideas of a work that form its universal and religious traits, it is often sufficient to follow a certain heartfelt sensibility. Examining the musical essence of the ‘Moon over the Ruined Castle’ tune in this way, it seems to have a pure and candid footprint, like the great sketches of the painter. Above all, this tune fits the deep movement of the soul. And it tells the graceful nostalgia that forms the spiritual delicacy of Japan, and the graceful humility and modesty that shows the way with the love of all things, without using words.” Most likely this quote came from the liner notes of this collection of arrangements of “Kōjō no Tsuki”: https://www.kingrecords.co.jp/cs/g/gKICG-3133/

The contrast between the chanting and the final part is just so incredibly powerful, and imo it's what makes this song stand out.

Btw, for those curious about where the chant comes from, it's track twelve (Hymne des Chérubins) of this collection: https://www.discogs.com/Le-Choeur-Des-Moines-De-Chevetogne-La-Divine-Liturgie/release/11221004 As others have pointed out, it's not actually Gregorian chanting, although the vocal style is pretty much identical; it's in Old Church Slavonic.

This song is one of those 11/10, 3 thumbs up, 6 stars etc songs. All of the riffs in this song are incredible, and so many lesser bands might try a gimmick like inserting the chants only to have it fall on its face. Truly one of their masterpieces

The riff right after the chanting part is the best riff of the whole album. That combined with the buildup of tension... might be the best moment on any DsO song.

The point is that here black metal action is interrupted not gregorian chorales, but by the orthodox motet "Иже Херувими (Izhe Heruvimi)" executable in old church slavonic language. In Orthodoxy the Cherubic Hymn is the central element of "Liturgy Faithful", that is completion of the preparatory stage to beginning of awesome contemplation of Victim, feasance of incomprehensible mystery of receiving Communion.

Each time I almost literally find it scary waiting for the abrupt change back to black metal. I know it's coming but not exactly when. It's so great.

The chanting leads to such an abruption of insanity out of nowhere. Most black metal bands could never conceive of this concept of gripping the listener in and demanding attention.

"probably the best 12 minutes of black metal ever" well technically, not all 12 minutes are black metal ;>;>;>;>
