Ohh I've recently found out about Desolate (idm/ambient).. And.... its awesome! :D Has a lot of emotions In his music. I can hear why some may compare him to Burial but... No ! :D He is better in my opinion :) And has a lot more emotions NOT just some mixed samples and the same (too loud and annoying sometimes) beat (burial pff :D no hate just.. sick of his music :) :) And Also Desolate has some (neo?)Classical elements which fit perfectly ;D So yeah.. ~_~ Nice :D

Guys. Just because somebody makes a dark song with a 2-step beat doesn't mean they're a burial ripoff. You wouldn't call Justice a Daft Punk rip-off because they have the same beat structure and both use synths, would you? No, they both play electronic dance music, that's all. Burial makes (in general) future garage, as does this guy. That's all.

I start to wonder if there's a possibility of producing this kind of music and not be discredited because of resemblance to Burial. The legacy of Burial is so big, I guess it will take some time for some artists to come out of his shadow. But I like Desolate alot, I wouldn't call it Burial for dummies. Each to his own. He has got definitely clearer, more vivid sound, there are things that are his own and unique I would say. Celestial Light Beings is one hell of a beautiful album.

It is so irritating the amount of comparison and critisism regarding likeness to Burial... Some people need to listen to more records... They are completely different records this brought me back to, but this is so singular in itself... Let his music stand alone, because it can.

It's good that we came to the positive conclusion. There are some Massive Attack influences here as well, listen to Teariness Of Lemnia, it resembles Massive Attack's Teardrop, or is it just me?

@councilof9 "Desolate is musically way levels above Burial will ever be" <-- the funniest thing i have ever heard. It's simply not the intention of Burial to produce "clean and perfect" sounds and you are definitely not able to judge Burial's musical progress in future. By the way, i like Celestial Light Beings and i got it on vinyl but sounds too "clean and perfectly produced" for me. It's just a matter of taste.

it's always funny to see how discussions about experimental artists are usually being ended by comparing them to Burial or Aphex Twin. Take a break

burial produces his stuff on soundforge. i'm not sure he's trying to sound "pure, clean" and "perfectly produced", either. you're clearly missing the entire london pirate-radio aesthetic that burial (and a lot of hyperdub) are going for. pristine digital production is the done-thing. to say that desolate is "musically way levels above" is a pretty stupid comment. desolate's sound is heavily indebted to burial; these albums probably wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for releases and musical events such as the self-titled and 'untrue'. well-produced fascimiles or not.

Celestial Light Beigns is, as expected, absolutely brilliant. Heavier use of strings and organic sounds than in previous release, and for me it has nothing to do with dubstep - just pure and beautiful downtempo. And, for all of you saying he copied Burial, i hope you realize that Desolate is musically way levels above Burial will ever be. Sounds are pure, clean, detailed and perfectly produced which is actually the last thing you can say about Burial. They maybe share the same style, but i will always choose quality and clarity

sure, desolate serves pretty much the same emotional paradigm that burial does. but i dont see that much 2step yada yada in his tunes, i would much rather locate it in the dubby side, like an almost "classical" approach coming from dub techno. that niche thing is a topic of its own though. i personally think it would be much more interesting to see him do more house oriented tracks.

@Inkursion I definitely see where you're coming from, I often draw similarities between this Desolate project and Burial (particularly Untrue) however I still think Sven adds his twist/touch of class to the sound. The frequent use of lush strings and more focus on the instrumental side of things is the main difference. Really enjoying Celestial Light Beings, Invisible Insurrection still tips it at this stage.

"tasteless dubstep artists", yes, certainly. but this clearly doesn't fall under the purview of dubstep. and to be honest the 'post-dubstep' tag is a bit of a grinding annoyance that has long outstayed its welcome (people are clutching at straws really to pin-down burial's sound when, for the early stuff at least, it didn't really match any existing genre or london microscene). you're right, more of a great sound cannot be an entirely bad thing... but it's almost annoying how good sven is at production, how good some of these songs are (and they really are) - when the overall end result is like picking up a burial LP from 5-6 years ago. maybe it's just me, being over-satured with the whole london scene these last few years... but skippy, melancholic, moody, atmospheric, 2-step, yada yada yada, etc.etc. music has been rinsed to death -- and it harms this desolate stuff. though it may be a league above, it's still a league above a really overdone little niche, imho. $0.02.

i don't know whether to like this or not... it's almost a pastiche of burial. it's like he drafted up a list of what makes burial good and then integrated it into every track as a collection of loudly-announced tropes, for e.g. the gunshell samples, ambiguous-androgynous screwed vocals, etc. i really like his earlier 'xine' stuff because it seems like a great standalone-album... but with this desolate stuff, i'm not sure whether the conscious allusion/tribute-making crosses over too much into the realms of being just plainly derivative.
