That wikipedia line lives forever rentfree in my head: "In a 2009 interview, Longstreth embraced some of these comparisons but expressed a dislike for several of those musicians, commenting, "Steely Dan is a band I’m not that into," "I’m not a huge Yes guy," and "Frank Zappa I fucking hate.""

Self-titled album is so underrated. Seriously some of the sounds on Up In Hudson and Ascent Through Clouds hit that sweet experimental spot more than anything on Bitte Orca or Swing Lo Magellan (although those two albums are better overall imo).

Absolutely. The new EPs marry the Swing Lo Magellan sound with the best R&B flourishes from the S/T and Lamp Lit Prose. They're fantastic. This live session is insanely good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSgJ_6sOBB8

I can tell they're going to become my favorite band. Can't believe I went so long without listening to them

Well, if your interested, I recently discovered a band called volcano! that is very Dirty Projectors-esque (especially their two most recent albums). Also, check out the album Money by Skeletons. DP is one of my favorite bands. It's hard to find similar sounding music, so I figured I'd mention it here or anyone looking. Haha.

The facts that Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian isn't on the new album and David Longstreth continues to use the name Dirty Projectors on this album makes me sad. This could have be a great solo album, and in a way it is. However, I miss the Dirty Projectors that they built up over the twelve years together. The new album is good, but it feels too empty. Sad... Swing Lo Magellan and Mount Wittenberg Orca with Björk are still my favorite albums.

not to discredit your emotional and valid reaction, but dirty projectors actually existed before amber and angel! their early albums were weird/cool david longstreth projects that are worth checking out. that said, i agree that it's a bit sad not hearing amber or angel's vocals on the new album, since they defined the past few albums

I know that. However, there is a big a difference between what Dirty Projectors was before, and what it became. And for me, Dirty Projectors was at there best between 2005 and 2012. It's just an opinion.

Great production. Not with same passion as once Amber was in the band, and not easy to listen at first but it grows on you. High and low pitched vocals perfectly show how Dave feels. And yeah, spare us from 'I miss the old DP' etc, etc.

Ascend Through Clouds is unforgivably bad. These AutoTuned vocals are indefensible. Why, Dave, Why?
