"The gameplay was just the very basics of platforming games, not including the 3D spinning feature." <-- talk about missing the point entirely. I could say, Grand Theft Auto is just the very basics of a driving game... not including the EVERYTHING ELSE YOU DO. also: soundtrack is amazing, possibly my favorite game score.

I got this game on a humble bundle once, never even played it. Didn't realise Disasterpeace did the music for it; definitely going to play Fez sometime soon

A really unique combination in this soundtrack, of chip-esque and ambient sounds. Really unique. :D Also, I agree with the person below, the music really captures this wondrous essence, and yeah, it does tie back to primal things, like youth even. And discovering the world around. ^^

v what arglactable said... well to me it's a masterpiece, every step of the way made me think "omfg the guy who made this is a genius, how did he think of THAT?!" (I don't care if he's an asshole). And some later platforming parts are REALLY HARD, like the lava and industrial levels. Level designing and gameplay designing aside, it brought me so much joy to just walk around and explore in the game looking at things, trying to piece the story together, in a way I haven't felt since, I don't know, I played Ecco as a kid maybe. This is what video games as art is, imo. And the puzzles were hard to most people :/

The basic game-play was about exploration and atmosphere more than it was about challenges and puzzles. It wasn't supposed to be challenging. Beyond that, some of the more hidden puzzles are just crazy. And it's really not just a 3D with the illusion of 2D game, because you don't move as you would in 3D space. At all times, the game functions within whatever two dimensions you have switched it to. If it were just 3D, most of the platforming wouldn't work. There are no 90's 2D platformers that are like FEZ.

If this was the 90's maybe. Fez was essentially a 3D game with the illusion of 2D, not really the other way around. Not that it wasn't interesting, but it wasn't enough to carry the game in my opinion. The gameplay was just the very basics of platforming games, not including the 3D spinning feature. Even the puzzles were a little weak, either too easy or I'd end up solving them and not knowing what I did to get there. I did really like translating the language though. It was fun using pencil and paper to figure out a game again. That stuff and the atmosphere the music gave it was what I liked. The collect-a-thon platforming stuff isn't really anything new though.

Okay. It's still amazing. What Fez does and introduces to 2D gaming is vastly more than what Disasterpeace has done with 8 bit music.

@OgirdorOhorror Isn't "real songs?" Different music has different purposes. The FEZ soundtrack is about harmony, atmosphere, and sonic texture. The "atmospheric bullshit," as you put it, is exactly why this is a masterpiece. Perhaps you should broaden your musical horizens.

@OgirdorOhorror First off it's a soundtrack, so atmospheric "bullshit" should be expected, and secondly, it's a much more mature and developed release compared to most any of his other work. It has all those awesome energetic tracks while still painting a really nice picture through minimalist yet intricate soundscapes. In fact, that atmosphere is exactly what makes this such a standout piece. Music to get lost in, yet still enjoy on an entertaining level. /rant Yeah, needless to say I'm really loving this. One of my favorites this year.

Is it just me, or is his music actually getting better with each consecutive release? This soundtrack is phenomenal.
