Doctor 3 is an Italian jazz trio consisting of Danilo Rea on piano, Enzo Pietropaoli on double bass and Fabrizio Sferra on drums.
The formation was formed in 1997 on the occasion of their first record, The Tales of Doctor 3, judged best Italian album of the year by Musica Jazz magazine in 1998. The same magazine in its annual Top Jazz referendum also declared them the best Italian jazz group in 1999, 2001 and 2003.
The group has recorded several albums, with the characteristic of exploiting the Italian song as a necessary element for improvisational development. The project uses heterogeneous musical material for an original jazz reinterpretation: from Pietro Mascagni to Sting, from the Beatles to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from Domenico Modugno to Tom Waits.
