DRIFTKIKKER is a musical collective led by Daddo, whose iconoclastic songwriting avoids established paths and clichés. From its inception, Driftkikker has introduced a new musical style through the deft fusion of contemporary sounds with a love for jazz. Riding an experimental edge while still soothing through sound, DRIFTKIKKER’s sophomore album, D-Time, stamps this new musical style with directness and honesty.
Influences
This diverse musical template originates in Daddo’s
childhood listening. He explains, “My dad’s record collection featured few thousands LPs and I remember being absolutely mesmerized by Blue Note records, The Police, Pink Floyd, and Bob Marley when I was six years old. This left a lasting mark on me that I wasn’t aware of until I started playing guitar.” Daddo played in several teenage bands, co-founded an art gallery, started an interactive avant-garde performance project, and played at The Hague’s North Sea Jazz Festival and Tobacco Road in Miami (USA). Not bad for a boy who was once “turned down by a music school because they claimed I had no talent”.
Origins
DRIFTKIKKER formed while working on its debut, Coming of the light, with Nenad Radosavljevic on bass and John Kakiay on drums. It was not long before DRIFTKIKKER opened for national heroes such as Wouter Hamel and Hans Dulfer. Meanwhile, Coming of the light, received high critical acclaim. The track, What, was included on the Mercedes-Benz compilation CD.
Name Explanation
Contrary to what the name suggests (driftkikker is Dutch for “someone impulsive”), the music is quite cool, groovy, and relaxed. When asked, Daddo replied with a smile, “Due to my temperamental and somewhat volatile nature I have been called driftkikker many times but music is my remedy.”
