To promote EXO's debut mini-album, SM Entertainment released twenty-three teaser trailers featuring the members of the group from December 2011 to February 2012, which included some previews of the songs from the extended play. Three singles for the mini were teased: "What is Love", "History", and title track "MAMA". Promotional single "What is Love" is sung only by EXO-M members Chen and Luhan.
On April 9, 2012, SM Entertainment released both versions of the debut extended play MAMA. EXO-M's MAMA was a commercial success. It was number one on China's Sina Album Chart, number four on the Gaon Album Chart, and number twelve on the Billboard World Albums Chart. All three singles by EXO-M were charted in various Chinese music and video charts, with "MAMA" topping the charts after one day of release. The music videos for all three singles peaked at number one on Chinese streaming websites.
