Biography

Emmelis : This young and beautiful Puerto Rican released her first studio album in 2012. With her unique voice, the self-taught guitar player took some of her closest friend's stories to a whole different level in the album titled No hay superheroe (No superhero) with pop, rock and even slow songs that will make you smile and think.

Born in Boston, Emmelis Escalera transferred to Puerto Rico after a year with her family. Growing up in a catholic school, Emmelis quickly became very interested in the art of music when her church Parroquia San Juan De la Cruz found themselves needing a guitar player. Although she didn't know how to play the instrument and her biggest interest was singing, she bought a book and started learning to play on her own. Only a week later she started singing and playing for the choir.
Through middle school, Emmelis was pretty much a loner. She expressed "I could never relate to any of my classmates. So I didn't have any real friends nor I went to sleepovers and I didn't like any of the boys. To me they were a bunch of immature little people." Soon after her parents divorced, she started writing songs for Church and love songs as well.

She also started singing lessons, which at the time, her mom couldn't afford, "so I started doing my classmates homework in exchange for money, so that I could pay my vocal lessons and I actually learned a lot more without noticing it," she said on a radio show.

Before starting college she assisted to a Smithsonian Latino Center internship in Washington DC, which changed her life for the best, as she recalls. She was invited to perform 3 hours of "boleros" at their annual gala on 2008. After that she went back to Puerto Rico and started playing in various important venues in the city.

In 2010 she did her first concert Una nocha para mama, a charity event for her mom who had been diagnosed with cancer. The concert was a total success with great media exposure in the local newspapers and most radio talk shows around the Island. That same year, she met Jasond Calderon, a singer, songwriter and producer for the latin boy band Jyve V form the 90s, who helped her record her first album No hay superheroe.

As Emmelis moved back to the US, she met her partner and manager Ernesto Keaney, an awarded and well known investment advisor in the US, and she's been performing in various venues and has appeared in multiple radio shows for Univision and other tv shows and in the general media. We'll be hearing a lot more for sure from this promising songwriter in the near future.
