Listening to Eclipse off Out There, it's so easy to see traces of that European classical music of the early 20th C that influenced some of these jazz guys so much. Sounds like Stravinsky or Ligeti. Dolphy and Mingus the only 2 jazz cats to come close to achieving genuine, authentic '3rd stream' imo

Out to Lunch is probably my favorite jazz album of all time. I still need to look more into his other releases though

I love his live performances with Mingus and Trane. Then again, I don't think I've ever heard him play badly live.

between zappa and dolphy, both had an interest in 20th century orchestral music like Bartok, Webern, stravinsky, along with inspiration in modal playing from Indian ragas. They both had a liking for idiophones. Um. Both had interesting facial hair. Abrupt changes, strange time signatures. All I know is they are two of my top 3 or whatever favorite musicians so they must appeal to some common taste that I have. Glad I could contribute to this extremely useful and relavent discussion.
