Biography

Ernest Rhodes was born and raised in Springfield, IL. Though his parents (who are both musicians outside of their careers) made him take piano, trumpet and drum lessons, they expected him to become a lawyer. His father is an attorney and his mother is a paralegal. Having developed a deep love for music and Hip Hop as small child, Ernest started writing rhymes in sixth grade. By 16 he was producing and recording in his bedroom.

Ernest developed his skills and style further while studying psychology at Southern Illinois University. The day after he graduated with his Bachelor’s degree, he moved to Minneapolis. In The Twin Cities, he found a plethora of talented music makers and accessible venues that always seemed to elude him in southern Illinois. With the help of some new friends (including Brother Ali and Eyedea) in city that acted as a “fresh canvas”, Ernest recorded and released his debut, “This Journey, My Mission” under the name “Ernie” Rhodes. Three years later he released his sophomore project, “The Orbital Effect”. One that project, Rhodes was able to work with more Minneapolis heavyhitters including P.O.S., Dessa and Zachariah.

Fast forward to 2010. After a long break from recording, Rhodes releases his most personal and mature project to date entitled “Transistor”. He drops the name Ernie and goes back to the name his mother and father gave him, Ernest. In 7th century Old English, the name Ernest Rhodes loosely translates to “sincere person dwelling in open space”. His parents we on to something there…
