Evening Man is the performing and recording moniker for Paul Erik Lipp (b. April 23, 1982), a singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Washington, DC. The name is taken from the poem “Evening Man” by American poet Frederick Seidel. Lipp grew up near New London, CT, and studied poetry and electroacoustic music at Connecticut College. After college, he moved to Boston and worked with homeless & mentally ill populations while leading and playing in a number of bands.
In 2008, Lipp moved to a boarding school campus in rural Connecticut. While working at a residential facility for traumatized teens, Lipp began writing and recording songs for what would become “The Last Night,” Evening Man’s first album. Drawing on wide-ranging influences like Bela Bartok, Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, King Crimson, The Blue Nile, Prince, and Timbaland, Lipp performed, produced, mixed and mastered the album entirely on his own. “The Last Night” featured striking cover art by LA-based artist Jane O’Neill and a dark, varied musical palette combining electronic and acoustic instrumentation and lyrics that combine the confessional and the surreal. The album was released via Bandcamp in March 2011 to rapturous reviews.
