Oh. I personally like most of the beats on here and enjoy them generally more than some on Step in the Arena (and even some on Daily Operation as well) where Preem hadn't quite yet fully developed his sound. As far as there being a different feel, I think Premier was always trying to go for a different sound on each Gang Starr album. Still I'll relent that those middle four are in fact better and more pivotal.

It's Premier's production I take issue with more than anything but I guess he was going for a different feel here. Their 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th albums are all more or less classics whereas this isn't even knocking on the door. Nowhere near as good might be a bit of a stretch admittedly but in no way is The Ownerz "as good as any of their previous albums".

This is a bit underrated to me, it's not that far off from their first four if you ask me. It seems to borrow a lot from Moment of Truth structurally - as Guru had said at the beginning of "You Know My Steez" - "we have certain formulas, but we update them with the times." The thing this lacks is some of the real personal feeling that some of the parts in Moment of Truth had and perhaps some of the freshness that it's predecessor had as well. The album comes off a bit skeletal, mostly because of Gang Starr's straightforward of doing concepts for each song, they don't exactly mess together perfectly, and you could say that was a bit of a minor problem on Moment of Truth as well (but that album stuck together pretty well with the skits and undercurrent concept). No filler here though, gotta give them that at least.

Nowhere near as good as the four albums that preceded it but solid nonetheless.
