Speak to Me Someone (can't really remember the track name properly) is one of the best songs ever written. A moment of genius in an otherwise rather magnolia woodchip style music career. Still, if one off epics maketh the band, long live Gene.

Gene got slaughted in the 90's for sounding so much like The Smiths and sounding whimpy when put against the laddish rock scene that Blur and Oasis had created. There is a fair amount of truth to these critsisms but when they are good, they are really good and here is a perfect example of what they could produce

correction to last phrases of my paragraph:... that marked Britpop, but rather indie fundamentalism that has much intelligence and good values.

A song that stands above much of the other Britpop of its time, very good. In my opinion, it reveals the concept and feeling that the Britpop movement should have been more in touch with, because The Smiths and their likes personified real British indie to a large extent and were practically part of the social and to a degree political consciousness of their era and counting. The Smiths and the bands that were inpired off of them that played songs, together with Morrissey's solo music work were never really about the out and out cheer without a justified place in honesty that characterised much of Britpop music at its peak as they revealed much of the opposite feeling through their tunes, the personal politics of feeling left out in recent decades, and not a general populist feeling of happiness, out of (or due to) the British trad culture revival and/or whatever other perceptions that marked Britpop and not indie fundamentalism that has much intelligence and good values.
