Never thought that after years when I finally got to revisit GnR I'd actually start digging this album. I guess we really grow up.

Fun fact: the album is named after Axls Chinese groupies that all voted on who got to bang him first after he stuffed down 4 big macs and a diet coke (he doesn't want to get fat)

To be fair, you have to have quite a high IQ to understand Chinese Democracy. The political Message is extremely subtle and without a solid grasp of musical composition most of the nuances will go over a typical listener's head. There's also Axl's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization- his personal philosophy draws heavily from living in a Chinese Democracy. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize they're not just good- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence, people who dislike Chinese Democracy truly ARE idiots- of course thy wouldn't appreciate the, for instance, the musical genius in Axl's catchphrase "we live in a Chinese Democracy," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads as Axl's genius unfolds itself on their radio

Great album. The inevitability of a greater weight of expectations than the album could bear is a shame, but I enjoyed it in 2008 and still enjoy it now.

That song literally sounds like it came out of heaven. I'm surprised I'm not crying from its beauty right now as I am listening to it.

I remember the ultra hype surrounding this. Then when many people listened to it, they were disappointed by it. People expected it to be as awesome as Use Your Illusion I or even Appetite for Destruction. A shame that it didn't live up to the hype.

The 00's were almost as great as the 80's . In the 90's most metal and rock bands were missing in action.

It’s hukarious how a lot of the demo songs that didn’t even make it on the album are 10 times better than anything on this.

This is a really great album. Bit more mature/grown up than the old stuff. I'm definitely starting to like this much better.

Good album, with 3 or 4 very good songs, but the industrial stuff is a total shit.

But once you take away all the fluff, silly sound effects and industrial weirdness ( i do actualy like industrial just not here), Axl Rose definitely continues to prove his ability as a fantastic songwriter more than a few times on this. [2]

Not terrible, but terribly over produced for me. It doesn't have that old Guns N Roses feel. Shouldnt really be a GNR album either, more a solo record. But once you take away all the fluff, silly sound effects and industrial weirdness ( i do actualy like industrial just not here), Axl Rose definitely continues to prove his ability as a fantastic songwriter more than a few times on this. Prostitute and There was a Time are my personal favorites. Saying that i cant stand Madagascar and Sorry.
