His symphonies are like Kubrick movies. They're all so distinct and different from each other - and every time you revisit them you find something new that you hadn't caught before.

"He wanted the orchestra to feel something never seen or heard or performed in music, so he did radical things."

Brand-new from my Spotify Release Radar playlist: https://www.last.fm/music/Gustav+Mahler/_/Das+Lied+von+der+Erde:+VI.+Der+Abschied+(Live) with George Szell and Janet Baker in mono, but beautiful.

One "problem" I always had with Mahler is that his final symphony movements are usually pretty long and complex, so unless you have enough time (which I usually don't) you won't be able to appreciate them and actually start skipping them! Anyway, some of my favorites are the 2nd and 3rd movements of the 9th symphony, and every single part of the 3rd symphony! The 3rd is great, I don't understand why it's so much ignored here, not very listened to...

Dude you wrote this on my birthday, AND at around my birthtime, now that's pretty funny. Anyway, I mean it's long if we consider someone who listens to music mainly as a "supporting" activity, meaning I rarely find myself listening to music without doing something else in the meantime, so 26mins usually could be for medium trips or perhaps workouts and so on, which are occasions in which perhaps one doesn't tend to listen to this genre too much, but yeah 26mins are not too much, rather the 2nd and 3rd symphonies can be quite challenging to appreciate in their entirety considering the HUGE length (it's basically like watching a movie!)

Just listened to the final movement of his second again, and during the final part I just burst into tears and legitimately cried for the entire final choir section. It was the most powerful moment I've ever experienced in music, and words cannot do justice to how much this piece now means to me. Without a doubt the best piece of music ever written, the only piece of music that I would label truly transcendental, and the most cathartic piece I've ever heard! Thank you, Gustav Mahler, for bringing me so many incredible moments with this piece!
