teddy riley, the architect of new jack swing. guy's debut and follow up cd sound as groundbreaking today as they did upon release over 20 years ago. i've aged with this music and it's the soundtrack to my transition from adolescence into adulthood. i'll never tire of listening to guy!

As a teenager, I played "Guy" on full blast on my cassette tapes! LMAO. I had a surreal experience when I went to the Soul Train music awards & at an after party, you won't believe who approached ME & my friend dancing on the dance floor and said that I could dance? Damion Hall. I almost passed out. I was 16 or 17. I was classical trained as a ballet dancer but not popular dancing so for him to say that rocked my world! I have a few people who can verify this story if you don't believe me. LMAO!

if anyone's looking for a late 80's/early 90's new jack swing tutorial, start here. teddy riley's creations with guy are eternally preserved among the genre's best. aaron hall's lead vocal was directly descended from charlie wilson of the gap band's rhythmic tenor. these guys ruled for 4 consecutive years with only 2 albums; their self titled debut released in summer 1988 that was such a monster hit it ended up as billboard's #1 r&b album of 1989. after the dance floor smash groove me, guy would go on to release midtempo & slow jam masterpieces in "i like," "piece of my love" & "goodbye love," which kept the album near the top of the r&b charts for well over 1 year. in late 1990, guy released a sophomore cd that spawned similarly enduring r&b hits like "let's chill," & "do me right." it's easy for me to give props cause i came of age to this music...guy, keith sweat, bobby brown, johnny gill & bell biv devoe were new jack swing kings & guy's 1st album is indeed a blueprint 4successors.
