Funny how their "worst" album still sounds like a masterpiece. Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely and Sorry Somehow above all.

I think Grant's songs here are fantastic, you can really see the ability this guys had to make catchy tunes! I think it's a great album, with a couple ones shining mora than the rest, but still, very good.

The later stuff is good guitar rock, but it's kind of sad to see what was once one of the toughest, nastiest Hardcore Punk acts in the world playing "college rock." Anyway, "Hardly Getting Over It" is an absolutely beautiful song.

I think I overstated the change to Hüsker Dü's sound when they jumped to Warner Bros. It's definitely poppier than the earlier stuff, but this LP still has plenty of balls to it despite the cleaner, fuller mix. They were just awesome songwriters; whether they were playing brutal Hardcore Punk or more standard type Alt. Rock/"College" Rock (which this is largely still not), it was their songwriting chops that made them so good. The run they were on up to and including this record has seldom been equaled; Zen Arcade through Candy Apple Grey are about as good as Punk/Rock LPs get.

This is incredibly underrated...so many catchy hooks here, I can get "Sorry Somehow" and "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely" stuck in my head on a loop for days. I agree, no a big fan of No Promise Have I Made...would have liked it more if the lyrics weren't cheesy and the vocals were in tune (and they can do ballads, as shown with "Too Far Down"), but everything else is gold in my opinion. I suppose its their most emotional album, so that may turn off a few people, but it doesn't bother me.

The production is awful. I love the raw sound of Zen Arcade & NDR, but this one just sounds thin and dated. Other than that, it's their most interesting record lyrically, considering what both Hart and Mould went through at the time. That being said, it's probably my least favorite Husker. Always has been. I mean, its greatest moment is basically a Replacements rip-off...

Too Far Down and Hardly Getting Over It both stink, and it's a damn shame that they didn't write more than one verse for Eiffel Tower High. The rest is great though.

Huskers sign to a major, so what. Does Crystal sound like a band selling out. Has a more honest song ever been written about Iinner turmoil(Too Far Down). Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely is the best single of the Eighties IMO.

Underrated album. It lacks some of the rawness, and emotion of New Day Rising, but it's much more focused and cohesive. The sound is much more polished too...which can be for better or for worse depending what camp you're in. Doesn't come close to touching Zen Arcade though, obviously. Great album.
