I'll tell you why, because if you scrobble a jazz artist based on how many people happen to be in the band, you could easily have your scrobbles separated by (Artist), The (Artist) Trio, The (Artist) Quartet, The (Artist) Quintet, etc. And then sometimes, the artist could be playing with the quintet but just credited solo, and then another album with the same lineup is listed as the quintet. In the case of song for my father, which I believe is probably what you're referring to, in addition to the fact that there are two tracks where just a trio plays, there are in fact TWO different quintets that perform on the album. And are we then going to scrobble The Cape Verdean Blues as "The Horace Silver Quintet Plus JJ Johnson"? What about The Jody Grind, credited to "Horace Silver Quintet Sextet"? And what the hell do you do with Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, "Horace Silver and Spotlight on Drums Art Blakey-Sabu"???

Do you really want 4-5 entries for every jazz artist? I try to avoid this whenever I can and I think Last FM should merge all these pages.

actually I try to do the opposite, coz it's kinda a tribute to every participating artist on the record

Precisely. At least to my mind, the only reason to worry about an artist being scrobbled under a single name is to bulk up your scrobbles...sure, I'd like my favorite artists to be represented in my history, but I'd much rather acknowledge the people involved in a project rather than erase them with lazy tagging. That's 'only crediting Frank Zappa and not The Mothers of Invention' energy.

Zappa had a solo career and records with a band. That's vastly different situation from jazz where 99.9999% of records are not solo. You don't have to explicitly acknowledge that other people are playing. Furthermore, even if you do credit Miles Davis Quintet (or whatever) you still have no idea who is playing because he had multiple quintets. It's all just a giant mess that is best avoided by crediting the leader.

really into 'In Pursuit of the 27th Man'.. as much as his 'classic' stuff. despite not being as highly regarded or rated, but that doesn't say anything anyway
