Ah, The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri … snubbed, even hated in the school time! Between listless readings of a professor, a student yawning, a superficial explanation of the question, the professor’s yawn … But what will this Fifth Chant of the Inferno be at last! What a bore! Simple story, a story of betrayal … horns! Trivial … come on.

Then school ends, things change a lot and after twenty years, you’re up late at night to watch on TV Roberto Benigni reading the famous Fifth Chant “Paolo and Francesca” and… finally, again, you “see the stars “. Introduction possibly unnecessary to present the new work (in 2008) of Il Bacio della Medusa (The Kiss of the Medusa) but let me remember the path that many of us have done before we recognize “beauty”.

Second work of the umbrian band and a decided step forward, both, musical and lyrical, from the already self-titled debut album worthwhile.

The story of Paolo and Francesca, therefore, the theme of the concept. But if Dante had conversed only with Francesca, while Paolo was crying nearby, „The Kiss of the Medusa“ evokes the words right in this his pain, his passion, his torment, his punishment. And the music faithfully follows the story. No clear skies, no calm serenity, no Pintoricchio or Perugino (fellows of our band ….) but rather the more sulphurous Bosch, Bruegel, or better still (very nice in this respect) the album cover by Federico Caprai ( bassist of BDM) very close to the suggestions of the two fleming painters.

Music is often dark, led by the omnipresent organ and a guitar (also) hard, often embellished with a delicate flute and, to emphasize the most touching moments of the story, a paiful melting violin and a viola. Here and there some fine folk inserts, which dissolved a little subtle uneasiness between the notes and lyrics. High-level texts, in an ‘oldish’ Italian (perfectly suited to the story), played with a lot of transportation by Simone Cecchini, the new storytellers of medieval flavor.

And where the words are not necessary, they become protagonists Eva Morelli‘s flute, Daniele Rinca‘s violin (added value), Simone Brozzetti‘s guitar, Federico Caprai‘s bass, Diego Petrini‘s hammond or Simone Cecchini‘s sax.

The story draws to a close … Now is the time of „The Descent Of A Young Lover Into Hell“ … it was worth it, damned soul? To Paolo and Francesca was not given to see the stars, we are more fortunate, we enjoy reading Dante‘s “Comedy” and listen enraptured the “harmonies” proposed by the band of Perugia.

A must have … no doubt about it.
