'Knees' is the lead single for Injury Reserves second commercial album "By The Time I Get To Phoenix".
Before the albums release, when this song released as a single, it marked the first glimpse into a major stylistic change for the collective. Their jazz rap and hardcore hip hop style was absent from the song and album and replaced with a style adjacent to Experimental, Noise Rap, Industrial Rap, and Post-rock. This would go on to be classified under Post-rap with a sound similar to contemporary hip hop collective 'Standing On The Corner' which was legitimatized by the fact that Slauson Malone (member of Standing On The Corner) has production credit on this album and was a co-headliner on the albums tour cycle.
This song samples the song 'Sweater' by Black Midi. Black Midi is a Post-rock band which also further establishes the Post-rap influence as it is quite literally a blend of Alternative Rap and Post-Rock. The sound sampler in the song is a guitar chord from the Black Midi song that is replayed although it.
'Knees' is one of just a couple songs on By The Time I Get To Phoenix that contains a full verse from the late Groggs, who is one-third of the members of Injury Reserve that had passed away before this single had released.
This song tackles themes of Insecurities about Height, Their careers lack of growth, and alcoholism.
