Biography

Intake is a Colombian/American Rock Band from Dallas, Texas. The band consists of lead vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist/producer Jonathan Camacho, drummer Johan Camacho, bassist/pianist Jonny Martin, and keyboardist/vocalist/trumpeter/percussionist Daniel Colina. Intake's sound is primarily modern rock mixed with some electronic elements and latin influences (coming from 3/4 of the members being of Colombian origin) and ranges stylistically from influences such as Earthsuit, Radiohead, Mutemath, Muse and Bjork.

BIOGRAPHY

Intake was formed in 2003 as a project between long time friends Jonathan Camacho and bassist Joe Cifuentes, who began writing songs together after exiting previous bands. Starting without a drummer, the two used computer drum programs to write and record in Jonathan's home studio. This early material was heavily influenced by groups such as P.O.D., Linkin Park, and Earthsuit with hard rock elements and blended rap-like lyrical styles. After working on enough material for a live performance, the group performed at The Door in Ft. Worth, TX for a local battle of the bands, enlisting the momentary help of Jonathan Mata on drums, Frank Barragan on guitar, and Daniel Colina on keyboards (Daniel would later join the band full-time after moving to Dallas from Lubbock, TX. Since Daniel was living in a different city altogether, he was forced to learn the music for this gig through phone conversations with Jonathan singing the piano parts for him). After this debut performance (of which they lost the battle of the bands), Intake began working on solidifying a full-time roster, making inquiries around the area and finally, after trying out different guitarists and drummers, settling with a 3 member group with the addition of Jonathan's brother, Johan Camacho on drums. Intake performed around the area at local churches and youth camps, but was for the most part an on and off project, largely due to Jonathan's focus on college, attending the University of North Texas, at which he received a B.A. in Music Composition in 2008. During these years prior to Jonathan's graduation however, the band went through more lineup changes, parting mutually and amicably with founding member Joe Cifuentes, and adding bassist Jonny Martin, who was introduced to Jonathan by his older brother, Oscar Camacho Jr. at Hillcrest Church in Dallas, Texas. After an informal on the spot audition, Jonathan, being highly impressed by Jonny's talent and shared musical interests, quickly showed him some of the previous material Intake had worked on and the two began trading ideas on how to rework the songs and also began writing new music. Booking a gig at a youth night for a local church to show off new material, the band hired a temporary guitarist to fill in while still looking for a full-time guitarist. However, a week prior to the show, that guitarist fell through and Jonny Martin asked his brother, Ethan Martin to fill in for that night on guitar. After learning all of the songs, and playing the show, the band moved forward with Ethan as a full time member.

Intake continued playing more shows in the Dallas area, to great reviews, most notably in an article in the Dallas Observer. Darryl Smyers, a writer for the Dallas Observer wrote "…Intake claims influences as diverse as Ozomatli and Coldplay and songs such as "Vigil" and "Isn't It Beautiful" bear out such a bold assertion… the music of Intake goes well beyond the mind-numbing malaise commonly associated with suburban living." In early 2008 the band released "The Libertad EP", a 5 song album available only at shows which included early versions of "Inside of Me", "Vigil", "Isn't it Beautiful", and "Better Day" as well as a reworked version of a previously written song called, "Libertad". Also, at the beginning of 2008, Daniel Colina moved to Dallas after having graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. This move saw Daniel joining the band full time on keyboard and background vocals.

The band currently consists of Jonathan Camacho (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Johan Camacho (Drums), Jonny Martin (Bass), Daniel Colina (keyboard, trumpet, percussion). Live, the band also performs with violinist Jon-Michael Guerra, http://www.jon-michaelguerra.com/ who also co-wrote and performed string arrangements on Intake's debut album, Moments + Definition.

C RECORDS

In 2009, Intake made a strong push towards finishing up their debut album after about 3-4 years of, as they put it, "working on it" while facing a combination of obstacles including members being busy with college, working full time, church responsibilities, and other projects. In 2008 and 2009 particularly, Jonathan was busy working as a producer on various other hip-hop, r&b, rock, and indie projects as a part of the production team C-Factory Productions, made up of himself and Christian Chavarria. Nearing the end of the recording process, conversations between Jonathan, Christian and Oscar Camacho Jr. brought about the idea of creating a record label. Seeing the changing trend of the music industry and the growing power of self viral marketing exemplified in groups such as Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, C Records was established to self-release the record and promote other "C" artists, meaning artists with talent but little means to exposure. This became known as the "C Records Experiment", a blog to chronicle all the findings of a small start up record label in a changing music industry. The following is taken from one of the blog entries:

"We believe that being part of a large record label for bands is an OPTION not the answer. I am not saying that it is good or bad to be part of a major label, however I am saying that more hands that dip in the cookie jar, the faster the cookies will deplete and less to go around (no seconds, sorry). Meaning if you know how to use your online tools to work for you to communicate to your audiences, you can get your music out and people will listen. If you have a GREAT SOUND, who will not want to listen and tell others of your music?" -Christian Chavarria, C Records

MOMENTS + DEFINITION

In January 2010, Intake released their debut album entitled "Moments + Definition", which features 11 tracks, including a cover of "Lady Wisdom" written by Paul Meany of Mutemath and Adam LaClave of Club of the Sons during the early part of their Earthsuit days for the "Headless Clown EP". The album also features British singer Josephine Grace on the track "Chasing Love". Moments + Definition explores multiple influences ranging from Muse, Bjork and Radiohead to Mutemath, Sigur Ros and minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and John Adams. The album varies as well in stylistic inspiration which explores Modern Rock, Classical, R&B and even Flamenco. The album was entirely produced in house by Jonathan Camacho with some vocal production by Christian Chavarria and mixed by Erik Fischer and Jonathan's older brother Oscar Camacho Jr.
