According to Purple's Gillian: "Jon Lord was dicking around (or 'extemporising on a theme' as it's known in the trade) with a tune from the new album by 'It's a Beautiful Day', it was 'Bombay Calling'. I started singing...", but it's become a quite different song. Child in Time is a ten-minute musical orgasm with actual lyrics, so there was some creative effort involved. Incidentally, reinderd, what does "all of their best stuff" mean, what else?

iconan is correct. Deep Purple acknowledged their influence to Bombay Calling. And IABD were aware of the situation, but they had their own problems with royalties, with a long-standing legal battle with their manager, which they lost. LaFlamme wrote awesome songs but hardly got any royalties. Tragic really. Hopefully the story will come out some day. (Then it will be a beautiful day).

Dear kflorence, to say the truth, the opposite is true: they were Deep Purple who stole the early part of the Child in Time to the poor It's a Beautiful Day, just look at the release dates of their records, Bombay Calling is the 1969 , while the Child in Time was released in 1970. -.-.-.-.-. om hari om .....

@M3nT4T73 Mate, it's other way round ;-) DP simply took the tune. Think the case of Geroge Harrison and his 'My Sweet Lord'.

When I first moved to New York in the 70's I would play White Bird every morning and watch the flight of a flock of pigeons a New Yorker was keeping across from me on a roof. This song has many memories for me. Great for dancing barefoot with a flowing dress and veil.
