Biography
A musician who is 'versatile' enough to have landed himself in a position where he is the drummer in a band (The Boom!Cans), a keyboard/piano player for various sessions and jam bands, and an electronic music composer. Naturally, this means that no-one has a clue who he is, unless you know him.
Born not that long ago in a picturesque North East Derbyshire landscape scarred by its Thatcher-terminated industrial past, Jed Skinner quickly grew up to learn that computers have more than Locoscript and WordPerfect installed. Starting in 1998, as a twelve year old, he started making ridiculous electronic music using MIDI. Skipping on ten years, not that much has changed.
Part of the trouble with Jed is his insistence on being called 'J. Skinner', for no seemingly apparent reason. In fact it relates quite strongly with an episode in 2003, where he was almost expelled from sixth form. It was a minor incident - he had merely remixed a covert recording (by Andy Beksa/BXA, check him out) of his teacher giving him a bollocking. The backlash came when its title, 'Morgan Needs Prozac', became known to the staff. Following this, the teacher in question referred to him from then onwards as only 'J. Skinner', not able to bring herself to even write his first name.
Naturally, this was the break he had been looking for.
Now residing in Leeds, J. Skinner has made about 10 or 12 albums since 1999 and almost all of them before 2001 are fucking awful. Hopefully most of the back catalogue will be available for free on Last.fm soon - a misspent youth will finally receive its rightful airing.
