Biography

Jade Diary is an Australian, Perth-based singer-songwriter of atmospheric indie pop with touches of fantasy and melancholy. A unique blend of Birdy, Bat For Lashes, Ingrid Michaelson and Karen Carpenter; X-Press Magazine wrote in June 2012, “Every now and then a new voice with fresh attitude arrives on the acoustic-pop scene. That voice is here within the soul of Jade Diary.”

Under the stage name of ‘Jade Diary’, Cheryl Lim recalls a time when her brothers teased her when she sang and danced. This may have been part of the motivation for her to spend years undergoing vocal training, performing and songwriting.

Her debut album, ‘Mermaid’, released in September 2012, is haunting and atmospheric, taking the listener on an emotional journey; and explores the theme of coming to terms with the difference between fantasy and reality. The Sonic Reverie, a UK-based music website wrote: “'Mermaid' is the first full length release from Cheryl Lim's project, bringing together her dulcet tones with her humble tunes and choruses the size of Everest. The one thing I respect most about Jade Diary, and 'Mermaid' only serves to further this, is that Lim's songwriting is second to none. She pens songs that, given enough backing and support, could easily crack the mainstream.”

A recent 5 out of 5 review by Andrea Guy of her ‘Love Thy Will Be Done’ EP, which was crowd-funded by enthusiastic worldwide fans, mentioned that she “sings about sad subjects better than just about any artist … Sadness should not sound so good”, also that she “is an artist to watch; a voice that isn't like every other out there… She will have you longing for the days when Lilith Fair was the concert to see, because surely she'd be part of it.”

Recorded in Sydney, her songs attracted a stellar cast of musicians and was produced by David Skeet (The Venetians’ guitarist who's worked with Kate Miller-Heidke and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics) and features drummer of The Church, Tim Powles; Joel Sarakula, on the piano; Simon Rudston-Brown from The Falls on guitar; Anthony Albrecht on cello and James Harland-Wright on bass. William Bowden who mastered Gotye’s Making Mirrors also mastered her tracks.
