"Childish Things" is a 2005 album by American singer-songwriter James McMurtry. It was awarded the 2006 Americana Music Association Album of the Year Award. The song "We Can't Make It Here" was named the best song of the 2000s decade by music critic Robert Christgau.
The album followed McMurtry's well-received live album by a little over a year. The raw yet full roots rock-sound remains dominated by McMurtry's tough, no-frills guitar chords and longtime backing musicians, drummer Daren Hess and bassist Ronnie Johnson. The three-piece instrumentation is augmented by fiddle, organ, mandolin, and even horns on the opening track. There are a few covers this time; Peter Case's "Old Part of Town" (originally recorded for a Case tribute album) and the country standard "Ole Slew Foot" (shortened to "Slew Foot") featuring a guest vocal from Joe Ely.
