Between dream and reality there is a no-place inhabited only by the music of James Place. Fast-paced rhythms, cloudy synths and phrasing that gets lost in bright echoes born in the imagination of Phil Tortoroli, an active music agent, founder of the Styles Upon Styles label and part of the Rvng Intl. crew, when he does not use the avatar known as James Place. Active since 2014, the five albums by James Place feel like a wide sound collection filled with ethereal pulsations and emotional harmonies, capable of transcending specific trends of contemporary electronics: it’s more like a state of mind and abstract sensations. In his most recent work, Still waves to a whisper (Umor Rex, 2019 his fourth release for the Mexican label), James Place makes a hypnotizing call to the dance floor while flooding the space with unprecedented beauty, which we anticipate will reach its peak at our Edition 16.
