Good album, but doesn't hold a candle to Nothing's Shocking or Ritual de lo habitual. The songs that are on both this and Nothing's Shocking are better on NS, but they're great songs so they're worth hearing in any incarnation.

I was wrong! I don't know why it took so long to really click for me, but it did, and it's now further evidence of what a unique and utterly awesome band Jane's was in their initial incarnation -- fantastic live (as demonstrated here), taking elements of the 60s counterculture movement/Psychedelic Rock, Zeppelin-style mysticism and mystique and heaviness and Funk and blending them with L.A. Heavy Metal and underground Alternative/Indie Rock to create something totally different and exciting. They're a band that it can be hard for younger people to really understand the importance of in retrospect because in a lot of cases those people have become more familiar with the bands/artists who came after Jane's (or, worse, the post-reunion band themselves); make no mistake, Jane's Addiction very much helped to pave the way for Nirvana, Soundgarden, et al to break through to the mainstream. This gives you the band in raw, unpolished, charmingly uninhibited mode. As essential as the next two.

This is the band at their best. The mix of Perry's punk vox, Dave's Sabbath style guitaring, Avery's funk bass, and Perkins' tribal drums just mesh better than I've ever heard.

"I Would for You" and "Chip Away" are amazing, as is the version of "Jane Says". This album needs more listeners.

Perry at a show in 1987... "This song is about the gangs, man... L.A. gangs... Bunch of fuckin' shit. Gangs are a bunch of fuckin' shit, man. Only thing worse than a gang is the government. Anybody who don't care about that shit is 1%"

Sorry stones, sorry velvet underground, I love you guys loads, obviously, but the versions of your songs (sympathy for the devil and rock n' roll) on this album are my favorite renditions. Seriously an epic group to see live during this era. I was lucky lucky lucky to see them at a place that was 300 capacity at this time. Brilliant, inspiring and powerful.

The never recorded songs are awesome, some are part of their best (Whores, 1%, I Would For You, Chip Away). Pigs In Zen is almost as good as the studio version and has a completely different ending and Jane says is imo better than the studio version. Plus the covers are really nice and interesting...essential just like Nothing's and Ritual.

This album opened my ears many, many years ago. Less than 10,000 listeners - the horror, the horror.
