The album provoked even more controversy with lyrics such as "Up against the wall, motherfucker," which appeared in the opening song, "We Can Be Together." The offending word was mixed lower on the 45 RPM release of that track to partially obscure it, but it was still audible. However, the word "motherfucker" was censored on the album lyric sheet as "fred."

it’s hilarious that, even long after the euphoria of 1969, rolling stone on several occasions contended that this album was a five-star record, one of the top 500 albums ever made, etc…it’s not even close to being top 500 of the ‘60s lol

just checked your charts to confirm that you are, in fact, jann wenner. now that you’ve been canceled i’m sure you have plenty of time to start checking out music made 1) by non-white people, and/or 2) outside of america. will make that 500 *real* easy bud

1969, in my opinion, was the greatest year in the history of rock n roll, and this is definitely one of the ten best albums that came out that year. Amazing music!

it's cool that that was the original title, but it's also so lame that they not only relented to the pressure, but kept the damn flag on the front...what would've been a bravely anti-american message instead became one of the most plainly patriotic album covers ever (especially with a name like 'volunteers' lol). not surprising from typical entitled celebrity pricks, but man, what a fuckin' embarrassment

I don't think the production is bad at all. And the songs and performances are terrific. The band did a great job of incorporating a "roots rock" influence into their sound here and I think it works brilliantly.

The 2004 remaster sounds amazing. I've never heard the original album, so I can't comment on the original production.

PRetty much joint top with Surrealistic Pillow for me. Hey Frederick, Eskimo Blue Day and Wooden Ships are 3 absolute masterpieces.

OMG, '69., the sound of this album sounds so much more modern than many albums from that era...

i dunno, this album, is a major dropoff from the 4 albums before it... its a completely different sound, yes, but that pop/blues/psychadelic majorly and perfectly layered sound (perfected on surrealistic pillow) is what i like j.a. for....

I love Jefferson Airplane's music. It's very hard to choose between 'Volunteers' , 'Surrealistic Pillow, and 'After Bathing at Baxters' as my favourite album.
