Karen Dalton, who Joanna covered on Divers (“Same Old Man”) also has a song titled “Ribbon Bow,” and I’d like to think this is a nod to Karen as well.

Some of the lyrics just feel really jarring to me. I'm a massive Joanna Newsom fan but I think this is lacking something. This is my favourite album of the entire decade, though...so I'm not trashing her. Just trying to be unbiased.

I guess by 'held up' I mean for me personally. I'm not saying it sounds dated because I think Joanna's music exists somewhat out of time and space and most of her lyricism and instrumentation is so incredible. Overall on Have One On Me, Ribbon Bows feels a bit less than extraordinary. Something about the vocals and the way her voice is quite up close front and centre in the mix. I'm not explaining it very well. It's also one of the few songs on the album that she debuted in 2009 prior to the album coming out - I saw her perform it live at Somerset House in London - and maybe in my mind it's still out of context with the rest of the album. At the time she debuted it, everyone was still wrapping their heads around Ys.

but, though i get so sad (could swear the night makes a motion to claim me, around that second verse), i reckon i've felt worse, and still held fast.

whenever I listen to this song on headphones I think someone is knocking on my door. there's all these door-knocking sounds in the left channel that happen every so often.

Can't believe I used to think this one was dull. Amazing, especially from the second half!

My version is 30 seconds shorter than that which is listed. Regardless, this song is flawlessly amazing.
