I remember being a freshman in college when this song had just come out a few weeks prior... man, it REALLY soundtracked that stressful first semester as a music major lmao (so glad I eventually switched majors though!!)

a song that has achieved creative and cultural resonance in a way almost no other artist has in this century

A carillon, a ballet, a ritual cry on the ancient ruins of death, which lie buried below every new civilization

I had to recite “Ozymandias” for a class in college, and when I got to “Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!” I thought about the end of this song and almost starting crying??? Got an A, baby!! THANKS, JOANNA ♥️

It has also the highest pitch note that Joanna ever recorded (to date), except for the lovely squeaks in Colleen

I fell, I tried to do well but I won't be. Will you tell the one that I loved to remember and hold me?

Walking through Washington Square Park and realizing the inscription on the arch is used in the lyrics of this song was a really cool experience.

"le poétique dans l'historique, l'éternel dans le transitoire" etc. ;___; Vraiment époustouflant.

The images and the music in this song are matched and blurred quite beautifully; first complete of listens sort of remind me of watching something multi-sensory like a ballet performance and being so fully immersed in what's occurring before you that you can't figure out which of your receptors are processing the information and creating the meaning you just FEEL. Listen and despair seems apt too.

this has been stuck in my head all day and night... i loved it when i heard the live version, and this is even better! the lyrics are phenomenal, like the best of joanna's songs i feel like it enhances my view of the world. i see the city in a slighgtly new way now. i cant' WAIT for the full album!

I listened to this thirty times when it was just a cell phone video at a concert, and I've probably listened to the video thirty times over again. I love how even when you're not following the lyrics little fragments still jump out and set the mood perfectly, things like "a hunter a hundred years from now…", gah…gorgeous. Divers is going to SLAY.

i am a human wholly obsessed with music, and yet can't think of another artist who, when they release a new single, i would stop all else i'm doing and just listen to it endlessly on repeat. the noose is the greatest; because every new song, new album, new show confirms that greatness.
