In 1978, keyboardist Joe Sample, known for his work with the Crusaders, was at the forefront of the emerging genre of contemporary jazz, which later became known as smooth jazz. He emphasized catchy melodies, light funk rhythms, appealing chord changes, and a pop sensibility. In this particular release, Sample collaborated with the late legendary guitarist Billy Rogers, bassist Pops Popwell, drummer Stix Hooper (from the Crusaders), a horn section, and various guest guitarists. The album features eight tunes composed by Sample himself, including tracks like "Fly with the Wings of Love" and "Islands in the Rain." Throughout the album, Sample delivers melodic performances and creates a variety of light grooves, making it suitable as excellent background music. This release reflects the transition from fusion to contemporary jazz and showcases Sample's talent for crafting accessible and enjoyable jazz compositions.
