gotta say i really want to like this stuff but it just never sticks. feels like bruce hornsby in that way – aside from a song or two, it’s mostly anonymous heartland fare that served a useful sociopolitical purpose in ‘80s america…but there just ain’t much to it

I said hey Diane you wanna eat a chili dog behind a shady tree? Nibble on some chili dogs, chili dog please. Oh chili dog, chili bowl. Let the chili dog come and save your soul. Hold onto that chili dog as long as you can. Chili dog’ll come around real soon make you a chili dog man. Chili dog.

As an Aussie bloke who loves nothing more than the wide open road and getting outta the big smoke, John Mellencamps' tunes suit the Australian countryside so well I sometime forget he's singing about the heartlands of the USA. Wherever you're from, country folk are dealing with much the same thing and have the same values. The music translates regardless of locale. Atleast, that's one mans opinion.

I agree. I live in the country, but I have to work in the city four days a week, and I can't wait to get back home.

I think on his last 3 albums he reached his best potential. A stripped down, raw and warm sound, sincere and lovely.

The thing you gotta remember about these charts is that any band who has any type of Christmas affiliated song will see their charts freak in the month of December. See [artist]Low[/artist] , [artist]Elvis Presley[/artist], [artist]Casiotone for the Painfully Alone[/artist] - the song charts are gone now but you can still see it in the "recent listeners trend".

@Lord_Kur: even if I listened to a couple 1000 times it would not be number one. I just find it silly that his rendition of I saw mommy kissing santa claus and cherry bomb are ranked in front the authority song. I mean really?

20th June 1978. City Hall, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. I was there to see Thin Lizzy on their Live and Dangerous tour. During the evening I was treated to what is still the best "support" band I have ever seen, Johnny Cougar. Bought "A Biography" the following day.
