If you hadn't told me which album this was, I would have though it was from Mingus XD very much ahead of its time, great jazzy stuff.

Just goes to show people can't even read a very good explanation of what this song is about, even when it is written on the same page they are writing on. And no, I didn't come up with the explanation.

@LightAscension, I agree with you. What else would the pretty girls be after him for? But what great use of words! The elephant is conjured so vividly it's actually a libido-killer.

I love Joni!! Got all her music etc. For all y'all who don't get the "pachyderm" reference: *ahem* Joni could be quite bawdy in her veiled Scorpio way. Let's just leave it at what on a guy's anatomy resembles an elephant's trunk?? (At least that's what most guy's hope it does!)

This is the ultimate chill out track, from an unbelievably talented artist. I don't think a bloke could create music like this, so sweet and tender. And it's only got 8 shouts!

Basically, it refers to (mostly in free form jazz music) when the drummer is soloing and then gives a cue to the other musicians to join in again. In the context that Joni used, it's a cue for "all those pretty girls" that are waiting on his cue to join him.

Boom Boom Pachyderm, (Pachyderms are thick skinned animals like rhinos and elephants) Knowing this does not help me understand what Joni is talking about.
