Joni Mitchell wrote "Little Green" in 1966, five years before the release of Blue. It's considered one of the most personal tracks on the album, as it narrates how 20-year-old Mitchell decides to put up her then-infant daughter for adoption.
Joni called her daughter Kelly. Kelly green is a shade of green (thus the name of the song). She is hoping that by naming her daughter Green it will mean the winters cannot fade her.
"I was dirt poor. An unhappy mother does not raise a happy child. It was difficult parting with the child, but I had to let her go." Explained the musician in 1997.
In "Little Green", Joni feels like a child herself, and now she has a child. She has to act grown up, but she simply feels so overwhelmed.
Joni laments the situation yet has hope that she is giving her daughter the chance for a better life.
In 1997, Mitchell and her daughter reunited.
