Lit only in the electric glow of the condominium ant-farm across the water—waves of light and sound careened into a multi-sensory ocean—my guitar seemed to extend straight from my hands. My very soul unfurled from my body—showering sound in an enormous embrace, tight as though I were welcoming a long-lost friend. In the lake’s stillness—barefoot in the damp of the island floor—one would swear the city was weeping. The towering skyline against the water—just beyond the tall grass—lay bare a stark and hilarious contrast between urbanity and nature. The city crooned its momentary, mercurial drone over the eternal refrain of our liquid life-source on its ancient pluvial journey. It is this scene—chaotic and yet harmonious—that bred Ward’s Island. Song, city, and singer—all but a nanosecond in nature’s eternal moment.
