Sounds like Dexter's dad singing. Dexter's dad from Dexter's Laboratory. Yeah, he would sound like that if he sang.

For some reason I always picture the band playing this song at Wembley Stadium in front of a multitude of people. This has an arena vibe to it, probably because of the driving, rhythmic drums, but the bass and guitar tracks also sound monstrous. And of course, Ian delivers some of the best lyrics imaginable with his signature dark croon, that also reaches some majestic heights.

You mean the studio version? That's odd, because for me this doesn't really have the typical "stadium" or arena rock soundscape that is more expansive. But yes, the song is majestic. A more expansive arena type Joy Division song would be New Dawn Fades in my opinion.

i hear this song and i think of the dingy bars and basements that they would've gigged at back in the day.. its crazy how the same song can make so many different people feel so many different things.

One of my favourite Joy Division intros, setting the tone before swooping up the listener into its claws...

I met Trent Reznor after a Pretty Hate Machine show where he opened for Peter Murphy. He was a stuck-up snobby little prick then and most likely still is. I've rarely ever been able to listen to NIN since then. That being said, his version of this song is actually good (as hard as it is for me to say that). I've rarely ever heard a cover better than an original though.
